Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: Which Lasts Longer: Microfilms or Digital Images?

Dick has done it again!  This article really does a great job of summarizing the significant problems facing us when it comes to deciding how to save our digital files (documents, photographs, etc.).

I spent a great deal of time researching this subject when I was responsible for the Information Services Division at the San Rafael Police Department.  There is no easy solution for any public agency either because they all cost money and take time.  The expense of converting the documents and photographs can be very high and then you have the on-going costs to store, distribute and maintain the records once they’ve been converted.

As a genealogy researcher, I’ve faced the same challenges with my private material.  As a member of several genealogy associations, I know they face the same challenges.

Take some time and read Dick’s article.  It will help provide you with a better understanding of the problem and may also give you some workable solutions.
