Mary Helen Pennington Christensen PEDIATRICIAN AND PSYCHIATRIST Her focus was state's young peopleStar Tribune: Newspaper of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis, MN) - Friday, January 31, 2014
Her focus was state's young people
Back in 1943, Mary "Penny" Pennington was one of 10 women in her graduating medical school class of 120 students at the University of Minnesota. It was considered a big class of women.
She would go on to become a pediatrician and then one of the state's early female psychiatrists, specializing in treating troubled young people.
She raised three children, and practiced in the Twin Cities until she retired in 1999 at age 79.
If it was ever difficult breaking that professional ground, she never let on, her children say.
"She was a real pioneer, but she was real modest about that," said her daughter Ginny Christensen, an educational consultant in Pennsylvania. "She gave a clear message that your job was to do something that made the world a better place. She was hard at work doing that her whole life."
Pennington, who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, died peacefully at her Minnetonka home Jan. 20, surrounded by family. She was 93.
Pennington was born in 1920 in Minneota, in southwest Minnesota. Her father, a dentist, moved the family to Minneapolis when he decided to go back to school to become a doctor. Mary graduated from North High.
In an interview she gave for an oral history project on psychiatry in Minnesota, Pennington traced her love of medicine to her stints as a teen working in her father's office when his secretary was off.
She rode the trolley car to and from the University of Minnesota. Once, when she had not finished her dissection in class, she carefully wrapped up her cadaver arm, pickled in formaldehyde, and took it home on the trolley to finish her work.
She and Llewellyn Christensen, another med student, married the day after they graduated from medical school.
Christensen was soon called to war and worked as a battalion surgeon in the Pacific, Pennington said in the oral history.
Pennington worked in pediatrics, then shifted into child and adolescent psychiatry. During the 1960s and '70s she worked at Boyton Health Services, the student health center at the University of Minnesota, where she did a lot of group therapy. Then she went into private practice with the Minneapolis Clinic of Psychiatry and Neurology. She treated adults as well as young people.
"She connected a lot with emotionally disturbed kids and their families," said Dr. Deane Manolis, a former colleague. "She was one of the first female child and adolescent psychiatrists in the state."
"She was very effective," he said.
Two of Pennington's children, Scott and Ginny, recall their mother as a sharp intellect and compassionate person who was gentle, dressed elegantly and was devoted to her work. She loved dogs, fiction and family, and was a skilled bridge player.
They spent many summer weekends Up North at the family cabin on Bay Lake, Ginny said, where she went on walks in the woods hunting for trilliums, lady slippers and mushrooms.
In later life, Pennington lived on the south shore of Lake Harriet and could be seen sailing around the lake in her boat.
Pennington was active in the Minnesota Psychiatric Society and the Minnesota Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and was a founding member of the Minnesota Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. She also was a longtime member of the Minneapolis Woman's Club.
Retirement didn't prevent Pennington from staying up on developments in her profession, Ginny said, recalling a time she met her in New York when her mother, at age 80, was attending an American Psychological Association meeting.

PENNINGTON-- Rogene Pennington, 79, of Arroyo Grande died Friday, March 14, 2014. Arrangements are under the direction of Lady Family Mortuary and Crematory in Arroyo Grande.
-------
Tribune, The (San Luis Obispo, CA) - Sunday, May 11, 2014
On March 13, 2014, surrounded by her family, Rogene Pennington left the building. Somewhere over the rainbow, she's playing over the hills and far away.
The first child of Dorothy and Chester Wilson, Rogene Elaine Wilson Felig Pennington was born July 1934, in Artesia, Calif., and raised in Bishop, Calif., where she graduated valedictorian of her high school class.
Always a competitive sports enthusiast, she lived her life by the motto "We don't stop playing because we get old; we get old because we stop playing."
While at Fresno State pursuing sports journalism, she met and married Phillip Felig, and they settled in Santa Barbara.
During the '60s, Rogene could be found organizing and playing outdoor games and leading piano sing-alongs with the neighborhood kids, or suited up as the MVP of her fast pitch softball team, the Alley Cats.
She and Phill helped develop the new ballpark for Goleta Valley South Little League. She flew right seat to pilot Phill, navigating many family adventures. She co-owned a research business with her lifelong friend, Leora Williford.
In the '70s, she was a regular at her kids' football, baseball, volleyball, track and tennis practices and games, always their biggest fan. She forged lasting friendships with her fellow team parents.
In 1982 she married Billie Ray Pennington, and they had a 31-year love affair that took them into retirement and on trips across the country and eventually up the road to resettle in Arroyo Grande to be near her daughters and five of their grandchildren.
Despite the challenges of recurring illness over her last 30 years, Rogene stayed active and maintained her joy for life.
She was the queen of corny jokes, loved music, computer games, Blackjack, the ponies, mending broken wings, shopping, and spending time with her sister, kids and grandkids. She was freckled, fun, and feisty. She never met a stranger and loved and was loved by many.
Bill was her rock and because of his tender, devoted, and attentive care, along with the help of her doctors and dialysis techs/friends, she was with us for many years longer than she might have been.
Rogene leaves behind her husband, Billie Ray; children Deborah Bowdey (Dave Watson), Michael Felig, Rebecca Alarcio (Edmund); grandchildren Cameron, Thomas, Becca, Julianne, Aimee and Nai'a; her favorite sister, Chloris Poggiogalle; and niece, Jaime Dinh.
The family will honor her with a private celebration of life that will likely include laughter, Frank Sinatra and Elvis serenades, and food she probably wouldn't like.

Brazosport Facts, The (Clute, TX) - Saturday, March 29, 2014
Josephine June Harlan Pennington
June Pennington, 88, loving wife and mother, died Friday, March 28, in Denton, Texas. June was born May 27, 1925 in Park Hill, North Little Rock, Arkansas.
She was the oldest of three children born to Alonzo Grady Harlan and Julia Brunette Loyd Harlan. She attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and married William McCready Pennington of Woodville, Texas on his birthday in 1945. Bill preceded June in death on August 23, 2013.
June had an outgoing personality and had many friends. As a student at the University of Arkansas she enjoyed life in her sorority, Delta Delta Delta, and was active in the arts, which included drama and dance. June was selected as a beauty at the University.
Art was very much a theme of her life and the walls of her home were covered with paintings—most of them hers. She enjoyed oils, pastels and watercolors. She was especially good at capturing the likeness of someone in a portrait painting.
Many enjoyable hours were spent with the members of the Brazosport Art League. She enjoyed the "Paint Ins" and served as an officer of the League. It pleased her to see her son Grady and grandchildren Seth, Eric, and Brandi become accomplished artists. June was known for her love of cardinals.
June loved family. Nothing pleased her more than to have her family around her. A Fourth of July Pennington/Young Reunion in Pilot Point this last summer gave her the opportunity to be matriarch to nearly forty family members.
June is survived by her daughter Stephanie Pennington Porter and son-in-law Dr. James R. Porter of Pilot Point, Texas, son William McCready Pennington, Jr. of Hendersonville, Tennessee, son Grady Harlan Pennington of Lake Jackson, Texas, son Brett Carlton Pennington and wife Deborah Waits Pennington of Angleton, Texas; grandchildren Reid Porter of Dallas, Texas, Colin Porter of Pilot Point, Texas, Brandi Pennington Leath of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Zachary Moffitt, Alex Pennington, Seth Pennington, and Eric Pennington of Angleton, Texas; and seven great grandchildren. June is also survived by her sister Martha Morgan of Evansville, Indiana.
The family wishes to thank the caring folks of the Silverstone Care Home in Denton, Texas: Jeni and Ed Hehmke, Elaine, Davey, Autumn, and Bertha and also Odyssey Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences with a reception will follow.
